October 2014 - Fourth Edition snowymountainsbrumbysmg.webs Hi all, Winter has been and gone -what there was of it and a pretty full-on winter for your committee. We have been engaged in a number of meetings with NPWS regarding the formulation of a new Plan of Management for OUR Kosi Brumbies, more on that later. We have also had two community interest meetings, at Jindabyne on a typical winter afternoon, thenTumut, details to follow. Firstly, a big welcome to our newest members that signed up at Jindabyne, Tumut, on-line and through meetings in the bush, your membership and support is very much appreciated. Dont forget if you are already an existing member and can get some new members, their membership will be valid for 2015. The more members we have the stronger we are and the more noise we can make, this is extremely important as the politics of the future of OUR brumby unfolds. There is an election looming, feel free to make that point known publicly as our elected representatives start to show their true colours. The two community meetings organised by SMBSMG at Jindabyne and Tumut were extremely well supported, the feature of both was the short film clip presented by members Amanda Johnson (Cooma region representative for us) and Andre “Boots” Schwartz, it was really well put together, well received by the pro-brumby audience and had NPWS personnel present looking at the floor. Both meetings were presented with SMBSMG resolutions regarding aerial culling, the suspension of trapping programmes until after the next Plan of Management(POM) is signed off on by the Minister and that the Minister commission an independent study to determine a sustainable population of Snowy brumbies to be resident within KNP. These resolutions received no support whatsoever from NPWS present, the senior Officer present commenting at both meetings that “all measures were on the table” regarding aerial culling–this tells us that NPWS/Greens policy is what runs KNP, not the elected government. SMBSMG were supported at Jindabyne by members of the Committee of Kosciuszko Brumby and Horse Camp Conservationists (KBHCC), a recreational horse-rider and bush user group from the Tumut region and we thank them for their support. Both meetings featured some very robust questioning of NPWS personnel present on all aspects of the brumby and bush user rights in general and had, in most cases had them scrambling to deliver answers apart from the stock-standard NPWS line of obfuscation and side-stepping. SMBSMG received excellent media coverage of the meeting and the results of the meeting, for this support we are extremely grateful. On a more worrying note is the fact that there is some white-anting of our campaign to preserve the snowy brumby by some that purport to have a similar agenda to us, but in reality have their own agendas and self-interests. Members of SMBSMG committee have been taking part in a consultative process facilitated by a mob (Straight Talk) from Sydney but in real terms they do not have a clue about the depth of feeling about the issue of OUR Kosi Brumby, they are supposed to be independent but run the NPWS line. SMBSMG, after the last meeting with them, conveyed to the NPWS Officer responsible, that we had NO confidence whatsoever in the process or its management. As a result of this no-confidence statement we were invited to meet with the senior Director, Metropolitan and Mountains, the NPWS officer ultimately responsible for the Snowies. His statement re aerial culling was “that aerial culling would not be ruled in or out” and his general non-commitment to any of our resolutions showed that his presence was all warm and fuzzy bulldust. Members should have seen the interim population survey results as issued tous (?) but they should be seen for what they are, part of a political justification for the removal of the brumby. NPWS have so far refused to provide us with the full population survey document, we can’t wait! NPWS data is that almost 600 horses went through their death-pens this winter, unchallenged by any group except SMBSMG. Members should also be aware of NPWS on-line gimmick “Protecting the Snowies”, a feedback process that is supposed to gauge and record public response to their survey questions but our feedback is that the process is engineered to get the results that NPWS and the Government want. SMBSMG have fired off a series of emails to local politicians lobbying for their support for our activities on behalf of the brumby, next newsletter will feature a name and shame of the assistance we HAVE NOT RECEIVED FROM THEM. As I said, there is an election looming so we fully expect to be flooded with political releases similar to the ones that came out when we advertised our Jindabyne meeting and stated that, in our opinion, the future of the brumby was in our hands, that the Government was acting in concert with NPWS to remove the brumby. These media releases came from John Barilaros office and Daryl Maguires office and appeared in local media strongly stating their opposition to aerial culling-really, what else would they say, that they supported aerial culling? Interestingly, neither Maguire nor Barilaro made mention of their support for a sustainable population of horses within KNP. Our most recent facebook post is a copy of the email sent to the Minister for the Environments Office, his electorate office and by registered post to his mail-box, he cant say he didnt get this one. His reply ,if we get one will be posted on our facebook page.We expect some political statements to emerge soon, stay tuned!!! We are still running our aerial culling petition,if you can help, put your hand up please. We also have for sale our popular bumper stickers for $2 each plus postage, call me if you want to spread the word! Our facebook site is the best way to keep up with what we are doing but if you need some info about what we are up to please feel free to ring me. SMBSMG will be holding our A.G.M. and election of office-bearers soon, possibly at Wares Yards or Bullocks Hill, so you might have to grab your ‘swags n snags’, there will be a mail-out to all members giving plenty of notice. Mark November 5thin your diaries, SMBSMG in conjunction with Jindabyne Cinema will be presenting the movie, The Man from Cox’s River. This is the story of how Luke Carlon pulled over 50 brumbies from the Warragamba Catchment rather than see them destroyed by the Government, Sydney Water and NPWS. It has all the undertones of the issues that confront us, it is a fundraiser for the Group, not a lot but it will give us and our activities some public exposure and is a really good movie, bring your friends. To those members that contacted me regarding comments by the President of Snowy Mountains Bush Users Group in their latest newsletter, thanks for your support and yesI dont have an ego and yes we were the ONLY group to challenge the Government and NPWS death pen trapping and removal policies and comprehensive failure to honour the 2006 Memorandum of Understanding. In fact if SMBUG executive had been doing what they say they represent, our Group wouldnt have been formed. As I said, stay tuned to our facebook page to follow our activities, or feel free to call me.
