Heres something I wrote today on Yoga if you are thinking of starting up. In this day and age we are more connected to technology then we are to our breath and bodies. In a yoga class we can switch off from that connection and connect to the self more. To recharge the body and connect with intuition by listening deeply to body and breath. It is important to know that one can practice Yoga postures without adopting eastern philosophies or religions. A yoga class is suitable for everybody regardless of age, experience, or level of flexibility and we can all benefit from it as long as we maintain a mental flexibility. As well as improving mental control which is also useful for athletes and those who are training hard, Yoga also improves strength, endurance, balance, and flexibility. Yoga also boosts levels of the feel-good brain chemicals like GABA, seratonin, and dopamine as the blood in the postures is directed to the endocrine system and the brain. Our Yoga practice asks us to make every single moment meaningful, every single movement mindful, and every single breath conscious. So we spend a lot of time being still in a Yoga class. Its in this stillness that we can surrender to the moment and look within more. Its in this stillness that we have the opportunity to recognize peace and joy. The present moment. But to also recognize pain so that we can be more considerate to ourselves and others. As we move at a slow pace we can also work the muscles more than we would at a fast pace so parts of the class are a work out as well. Mia teaches a Hatha Vinyassa (flow) style so we spend about 5 breaths in each pose so that we can process how the poses feel and how we breath and think in these poses. It is not an aerobics class and Mia likes to change it up every week so that you can learn new poses as well as practice and improve on some of the same poses. We move the body naturally and this lubricates the joints and warms up (heat) the body from the inside out. We also don’t sacrifice attention to detail which is important for safety. Classes are focused on physical and mental alignment and connecting the mind body spirit and breath. The atmosphere is friendly, supportive and attitude-free.
