Hi all. There seems to be a lot of questions and id challenges - TopicsExpress

Hi all. There seems to be a lot of questions and id challenges lately when it comes to Chickadees. I posted this last year and on some comments recently, but it might be worth posting again for people who didnt see the previous thread. 90 Percent of Maryland only has Carolina Chickadees. Allegany and Garrett Counties have Black-capped Chickadees. There are transition zones that have range over laps where any bird can have either genetics. I live in Cecil County where we have Carolina Chickadees but do get Black capped Chickadees during eruption years (once every 5-10 years). Green Feeder Photo: I took this comparison shot a couple years ago at my home during the last eruption year. Carolina on the right and BcC on the left. Note the way the white from the cheek over lays on the back and nape. Note that it doesnt just wash out from white to gray like a Carolina does. Also note the white hockey stick in the wing, the very long tail and the amount of black feathers mixed in the wing and tail. Carolina has a shorter tail and has a smaller head appearance. BcC has a jagged black bib that seems to come slightly further down the breast. The Carolina has a much cleaner line and a shorter chin/bib. Also the head of a BcC always seems to be a lot bigger to me. Brown wooded Feeder: This is a pure Black capped Chickadee. Note all the marks mentioned above, especially the throat pattern. Pretty cool stuff. Now look carefully at your Chickadees. There are a few Black capped Chickadees showing up.
