Hi all, thanks for the add. We recently discovered that my 9 month old is allergic to hummus or possibly pita bread. He tried plain hummus in small amounts once before, no reaction. Second time I gave him the same plain hummus with small pieces of pita bread - we had an obvious reaction. Rash on his face, small cough started (scared me to death), and then he vomited a lot. Thankfully his airway was not completely compromised but Im fully aware that his coughing was probably a sign that it had started to. We now carry an epi-pen jr in the house and his diaper bag. I have an older daughter who is 9 years old and has no allergies that we know of yet. Im allergic to avocado and now starting to become sensitive to melons (I know its connected to one another), and my husband cant tolerate dairy and I suspect other things such as gluten (though hes not motivated to try an elimination test). After googling the hummus reaction, Ive learned that the chickpeas and concentrated sesame in the tahini paste could have been the issue and are all tied to tree nut allergies etc. The pediatrician advised the obvious - stay away from hummus (including me eating it since my son is exclusively breastfed), and to not introduce any other nut to my son for awhile, which to her means a few months, to me means like several years at this point because Im scared to death that hell have a severe reaction. Im wondering if there is any advice that I may be missing here? I know it is possible he could have reacted that way to the small pieces of pita too. How do we go about figuring out what the culprit is without putting him at risk? Do I even bother or just assume hes allergic to tree nuts and never give him one? Are all tree nuts and legumes the same as far as allergen potential goes? Sorry for the long post. Thanks!
