Hi all, thanks for the add to the group, I have been enjoying reading about and looking at all the pictures of the westies on here. They are such fun characters. This was my little fella Barney Be Good, sadly I lost him recently to Westie Lung Disease, he was 11yrs 5months. Everything was going well with him up until September last year when I noticed he had developed a cough, a couple of times he would pass out but quickly recover. At first I thought it was Kennel Cough, upon taking him to the vet they diagnosed Bronchitis, however hes breathing became shallow at times and the diagnosis was changed to WLD. Barney being the fighter and strong willed character he was fought the battle bravely, managing to do everything he wanted, at times I could see it was a struggle for him but I think he was trying to please us. One Monday morning things took a dramatic change, I took him to the park, but it was clear he had no energy as it took over 40 mins to walk a couple hundred yards. Over the next 48 hrs hes breathing became very shallow, he became very distant, he would not eat and he generally looked very washed out in hes appearance, bless him he was so tired he was trying to sleep sitting up! On the Wednesday we took him to the vets, it was explained there was now more scarring of the lungs than actually lung tissue which was preventing very little oxygen to circulate around hes body, the only thing they could try was to pump steroids straight into hes system. Sadly it didnt work, the vet explained that if we took him back home he would not pass peacefully as he was in the very last stage, I took one look at him on the table and I could see in hes eyes he was looking for us to set him free and so we took the decision to let him go, we held hes paw and he slowly drifted off to eternal sleep. He has left such a void in our lives and we miss him every minute of every day. The picture of him on the park bench was to be hes last. RIP Barney xxx
