Higher Everyday Devotional LIMITS OF FREEDOM “...I will take heed to may ways…” (Psalm 39:1) By nature, human beings are inquisitive and want to be restrained. Our eyes want to look at anything and everything around. The hands always want to touch things; the mouth wants to utter words; the feet want to move around; and our appetite wants to be satisfied. However, any part of the body left on its own is like nails on the fingers and feet not trimmed, or the hairs on the head not dressed. This will make man look like a wild animal or monster. Unrestrained appetite not only affects a person’s health, it is also a sin before God. Unrestrained talking makes a person vain and light. Wandering thoughts are the breeding ground for evil deeds while unguarded hands are the tools for the devil. That is why wise individuals endeavor prayerfully to keep their bodies under control. “But I keep under by body and bring it into subjection…” (1 Corinthians 9: 27). “I made a covenant with mine eyes…” (Job 31:1). If you too want success and satisfaction, favor and approval of God, you must exercise self-restraint in every area of your life. You are not to comment on every word you hear; you are not to eat every food presented; you are not to gaze at objects of temptation. You are not to go everywhere you are invited and you are not to entertain every thought that comes into your mind. Challenge: I am free only to do things that are right. Prayer: Lord, help me control all members of my body
