His n o v e l s have n o t aged – first, perhaps, because they were written in a y o u t h f u l climate, but mainly because their s u p p l e n e s s has rendered them a d a p t a b l e to subsequent g e n e r a t i o n s. In H o w a r d’ s E n d, in a way the most s I g n I f I c a n t of his books, the Schlegels and the Wilcoxes contend allegorically for England, a faded heroine though rooted in that soil, to Helen Schlegel’s child by the egregious Leonard Bast.
