Historic Building in Downtown El Paso May Be Renovated March, 2014 The famous O.T. Bassett Tower, one of El Paso’s Art Deco treasures, may soon be in store for upgrading and renovation. The 15-story structure, which was built during the depths of the Great Depression in 1930, for decades served as an office building before being purchased in 2007 by the El Paso-Borderplex Community Trust. But plans to redevelop the property at 303 Texas Street were put off due to the recent recession. Now El Paso developer Lane Gaddy says he wants to repurpose the building for use as either apartments or a hotel. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Bassett Tower was designed by the architectural firm of Trost & Trost. A price tag for the purchase of the Bassett Tower has not been disclosed, but the property was appraised at $875,000 in 2007. Gaddy says he will later announce his specific plans for the structure, as well as a timetable for the renovation work.
