Hope to see you August 12th in Oakland! Join us to learn how to help Lifers and to better understand their conditions of confinement (including solitary confinement)! You Are Invited To A Special Screening of “Herman’s House”: A Documentary Exploring the Injustice Of Solitary Confinement & The Transformative Power Of Art. August 12 @ 7:00 PM The New Parkway Theater 474 24th Street in Oakland Admission is $10 (advance purchase highly recommended) This film screening is a benefit for UnCommon Law, a non-profit organization that helps long-term California prisoners obtain release through the parole board and the courts. We have already helped hundreds of prisoners obtain their release, including 21 already in 2014 (out of 35 hearings)! We also represent all parole-eligible life prisoners (roughly 10,000 in total) in a class action law suit against the parole board’s psychological assessment process. By coordinating with other organizations and training dozens of law students, we are working hard to give indigent prisoners a fair chance at release. Up to now we have been working on a shoestring budget and we need your support! There are 34,000 life prisoners in California, including hundreds sentenced as children, who need your help. Please help us generate resources and awareness for this important cause. Join us for a screening of a powerful documentary that captures the remarkable creative journey and 12-year friendship of Herman Wallace, who spent more than 40 years in solitary confinement, and artist Jackie Sumell. What kind of house does a man who has been imprisoned in a six-foot-by-nine-foot cell for over 30 years dream of? Come find out. The screening will be followed by a brief discussion of the film with former lifers in the California State Prison system. A special thanks to PBS’s American Documentary Community Network for enabling us to show this important film! Please visit our website, uncommonlaw.org, for more information about UnCommon Law. If youve seen enough and want to support this effort, you can make a tax-deductible donation by sending a check or money order payable to Prison Law Office, and be sure the Memo section indicates for UnCommon Law. Their address is Prison Law Office, General Delivery, San Quentin, CA 94964. We look forward to seeing you in Oakland on August 12.
