How many of you with neck pain spend most of your work day at a computer desk, typing away, answering phones, etc? The set-up of your work station may be the root of your pain. Check with your company, most organizations offer in-house or outsource ergonomics assessments in order to eliminate prolonged awkward positions that can cause stress on your neck, shoulders, and spine. Here are some tips: • Your monitor should be at eye level. • Forearms should be supported with elbows relaxed at your sides and approximately parallel to the floor. • Feet should be flat with thighs parallel to the floor. • Your desk should match comfortably with your chair. • Try to avoid always reaching or moving to the same side; have some variety. • Also consider the position of things around your desk, frequently used items should be within reach. • Most importantly take frequent breaks.... at least twice an hour. Breaks do not have to be long, I recommend getting up from chair once and doing a 20-30 second in your seat once per hour. If your neck pain is more chronic and you need expert guidance and hands-on treatment, all four of our therapists are trained in occupational physical therapy and the manual skills you need. Check back next time for stretches and exercises to counteract all that work posturing.
