Huelskamp began the meeting by sharing his views on the progress and financial state of the country. He was clear with those in attendance that he had little good news to report. “Frankly, your federal government is bankrupt,” Hueslkamp said. “If you think it is bad here today, ladies and gentleman, the burden of debt in this country is going to get respectively worse.” Huelskamp went on to express his anger and frustration about the lack of progress that has been made in Washington. He said that he gets a large number of complaints about regulations from the constituents in the first district. He presented a chart that highlighted the most frequent complaints he receives. Those included, braille on ATM machines, OSHA regulating small family farms and the USDA requiring kids to get a permit to raise rabbits. Constituents had the opportunity to ask questions of Huelskamp. Their questions ranged from topics such as the cost of welfare programs, regulations regarding school lunches and Benghazi. Many members of the audience expressed anger about the state of the country and fear of what will happen in the future. Occasionally members of the audience could be heard making comments like “lock and load” and “the President is a Muslim.” There was also a strong audience reaction to the suggestion that minimum wage be raised. Upon concluding the meeting Huelskamp confirmed that this town hall meeting was similar to meetings he has had in other towns recently. “It was pretty similar to meetings throughout the district,” he said. “People are worried about what is going on in Washington, particularly worried about the executive branch.” emporiagazette/area/news/article_c2fd6ba6-037c-5271-98e2-1990b628f279.html
