Huh. I do not have any problem at all with Barcelonas Muslims establishing a mosque; in fact, Im all in favor. There are some 460,000 Muslims in Catalonia out of a total population of about seven million, and they should have a place to worship just like any other group. Right now their only religious facilities are prayer rooms, which are generally in storefronts. I dont mind them putting it in the old Monumental bullring, either. Barcelona used to have two bullrings, one in the Plaza Espana that was empty for a while and then turned into a very nice urban shopping mall, and the other one, the Monumental, which has been sitting empty ever since Catalonia banned bullfighting several years ago. Seems to me they need to do something with that real estate, as long as they dont tear down the building, which is of historical/architectural value. My problem is that the planned mosque in the Monumental would be funded by the government of Qatar to the tune of 2.2 billion euros. Qatar, as Ive said repeatedly, is a medieval autocracy with skyscrapers that lucked into a bunch of oil money. If the local Muslims want to put up a mosque with their own money, then more power to them, but I dont agree with allowing a Wahhabi dictatorship to try to buy respectability, as Qatar has been trying to do for years. ccaa.elpais/ccaa/2014/06/24/catalunya/1403631658_554908.html
