Human Rights Needed In Detroit Michigan! Some communities have suffered Water shut offs for 14 years! Residents charge Genocide! Detroiters packed a town hall meeting tonight to hear testimony from Residents about the severe suffering caused by Water Cut offs by the Bankster Water Department seeking to privatize the system and a class gentrification whereby poor and working class African Americans, Latinos and whites are forced out of the city to clear the path for middle class and upper class resident. I was among the panelists of Detroiters and United Nations officials who heard the brutal outraged testimony and tears. My blood boiled as I heard parents and grandparents talk about retirees, disabled persons and children sitting in their homes in the dark, with no water, no utilities, and often no food. After the Water Department raises the cost of water sometimes to thousands of dollars and the residents cant pay, their water is cut off and the State may take the children. The excess bill is then attached to the property tax and if you cant pay that, your home may be taken. Schoolboard members talked about schools that must open at 5:30 a.m. so the students can come and take showers and wash their clothes. Sometimes, the water for entire neighborhoods are shut off rendering it impossible for neighbors to give mutual assistance. A homeless man who told about being put out into the street by the shelter and sometimes having no water nor food throughout the day. In some communities such as Highland Park, the water cut offs have been taking place for 14 years. Residents are charged bills in the thousands of dollars while they only receive a bill once a year or two years. Congressman John Conyers called for more hearings and collection of data, but many residents call the situation Genocide and demand immediate action.
