Hurricane tail hits UK air and ferry services Strong winds are causing delays and cancellations to flights and ferries in the UK. According to flight tracker site, Flight Aware, 6% of flights in and out of Heathrow have already been cancelled today and 9% of flights to and from Heathrow have been delayed. The airport said flights with the 20 biggest carriers would be affected as strong winds are expected when the tail of Hurricane Gonzalo hits the UK. Manchester and Edinburgh were also reporting delays and cancellations. British Airways (BA) had cancelled at least 45 flights on Tuesday ahead of the expected severe weather and they were reporting 109 delayed already today. A BA spokesman said: The forecast of poor weather has meant that, along with other airlines at Heathrow, we have made some proactive flight cancellations to give customers as much time as possible to be rebooked onto alternative flights. By 9am, Heathrow reported that 85 flights coming in and out of the airport had been cancelled while 113 had been delayed. P&O ferries on the Larne/Cairnryan route were also suspended from the early hours of this morning. The ferry operator was giving hourly updates to passengers via Twitter but advised them not to travel to the port. It said the service would be suspended until 16.30 at least. Its Dover/Calais route was also experiencing delays this morning due to the very strong winds, it said. The Met Office has issued be aware warnings, with gales forecast for much of the UK. It said the strongest winds were expected after the rain clears and winds veer north-westerly through Tuesday morning.
