I Am….. It is with a single minded focus that we must approach are martial arts practice. With the knowledge that we have at the initial stages we must do our best. As we come to know better and gain more knowledge we must discipline ourselves to do better than our best. Just as things open up when we go higher knowledge also grows as we go higher and gain experience. It is our physical ability at martial arts and the physical practice of martial arts that gives us the knowledge and the developments that we gradually see and feel in ourselves. Being in martial arts for a few years does give us the right to call ourselves experts, nor does it make us black belts by just reading or talking martial arts. There is no place for the ego in martial arts and the sooner we understand that the better it is for us all. Every belt and every dan is hard earned through years and years of practice, years and years of resilience and years and years of toil. A genuine martial artist can immediately be spotted because of the way the questions will be phrased, the way opinions will be written and the way doubts will be cleared. A genuine martial artist is never rude or coarse in word or manner. This is because of the personal growth in the person that takes place. Sometimes we do not understand many things that are told to us but it does not mean that what is told to us if false or incorrect it only means that we have not yet reached the level to understand even we think we have. The moment the ego starts developing is the moment when the downfall of that particular martial artist starts. The downfall is steep and almost bottomless. The down fall when it comes can be detected immediately in a person because there is a change of attitude , temper and behavior almost overnight. The ‘I’ is of no value it is the position of the ‘I’ that creates the value. Most times we concentrate only on who someone is but drop them immediately when the ‘who’ turns to a nobody. What we are is what is important as even when we are nobodies the ‘what we are’ stays constant even when we rise rapidly and it helps us to sustain ourselves without a fall. At the highest levels there is no place for weaknesses as the weaknesses will be used to feed it and cause a complete breakdown in a person.
