I dont normally vent on Facebook but after reading an article on the travel blog I Dreamed Of This I felt obliged to affirm and support what a foreigner could say about being Filipino. Filipino kids in NZ: you should be PROUD to be Pinoy and I am so bloody sick of hearing Filo kids put their own country down. Find a balance between being Kiwi and Pinoy. It doesn’t mean you have to be a FOB. Criticism should be constructive, not a stream of uninformed insults. Filipinos who act so ignorantly about their own country and are quick to make negative generalizations about the poverty/government make it difficult for younger generations to maintain a healthy sense of pride. People like that are the reason I find it hard to associate with Filipino kids in New Zealand. Do you even know who Noynoy Aquino is or why TIME named him one of the most influential people of 2013? Did you know it was Independence Day on the 12th? Just remember that because your mum’s ‘Taglish’ might sometimes be ‘embarrassing’ doesn’t mean her Adobo meals aren’t the best thing ever! It is incredibly disheartening to hear Filipino kids deny their heritage. If you have Asian features, don’t be so stupid and insulting to yourself as to say, “I’m not Asian, I’m not really Filipino, I grew up here.” The Philippines is such a cool place - a hybrid of Spanish/Hollywood/Asian culture and you should be proud to claim that as part of your identity. Going back to Pinas every year or so has shown me lots of white sand beaches, pretty buildings from the 1700s, cute animals and incredibly warm, smiley people who may live in the face of poverty but are happier and nicer than most for sure. Quality beer is also the same price as a bottle of water. Legit. I moved to NZ when I was a wee baby and I’m not devoutly Catholic (ha ha ha)/not very shy/struggle to speak Tagalog/don’t have a “Asian” group. I guess these are all stereotypical Filipino attributes I’m lacking, but I am so proud to say I was born in the Philippines. I am loud, I like food, karaoke, food and people who make me laugh. This video is worth the watch for anyone travelling to South East Asia and a must see for any Filipinos, especially the ones who haven’t been able to explore the country. Be proud of where you’re from! ☺ Also FYI Zac Efron says the Philippines is one of his favorite places in the world and I will trust his body any day hehe. I will never be ‘embarrassed’ of my wonderful, supportive Filipino parents who raised me on Hall & Oates songs, lots of Jollibee-style spaghetti and loved me even when I failed Maths (Asian downfall). Maybe I am just lucky to have parents who let me experience the best of both worlds and even if I am at RnV every new years till I am 65 I will always be proud to say #PinoyAko Rant over. https://youtube/watch?v=HxSuna9wqbU
