I find myself formulating a screaming hysteria meltdown theory of societal collapse. Every news report has to be more attention-grabbing than the last. So we find blaring from our screens reports of tanks crewed by elite special forces literally driving over one another to invade the Ukraine and its the Worst Thing Ever. Then were told Were All Gonna Die of Ebola. Then someone criticises that fact that nations that dont have Ebola never developed a cure and The West Is Morally Bankrupt. And the NHS Is In Total Meltdown. Again. And Fracking Will Cause Northumberland To Explode. Dangerous Dogs Will Eat Our Souls. Knife Crime Epidemic. New Climate Change Research Shows Earth Will Become a Second Sun Sometime Next Week. And while were reeling in terror, the hysteria goes on. reality TV which isnt real at all seeks out idiots to put on display. Now, Im all for marvelling at the depths of human stupidity, but theres so much of it on display that its starting to feel normal. Stupid fights over nothing, idiotic behaviour amplified for the ratings. Ever greater extremes of the ridiculous and the nonsensical sought out just to get attention because nobody can hear anything over the screaming hysteria flooding our living rooms.... Whatever happened to good old understatement?
