I first fell in love with boxing when I saw the documentary - TopicsExpress

I first fell in love with boxing when I saw the documentary "Tyson" in college. Although I was never particularly passionate about sports, something about the strange combination of childlike vulnerability and rage in Mike Tyson fascinated me. There is something hauntingly beautiful about the way he and other fighters manage to channel all the resentment and bitterness which comes from their rough childhoods and purge them - even if it is only for brief moments in the boxing ring. Mike Tyson found refuge in a ring from parents that abandoned him, managers who exploited him, and the public which both feared and ridiculed him. Here is a beautifully written essay by the great American writer Joyce Carol Oates on Mike Tyson. Her control of a formal yet still passionate and compelling writing style is something to behold. I highly recommend that especially my AP English Lit. students read it. After grading your essays, I was impressed by the passion and insight I saw but unfortunately a bit disappointed by the structure, flow, and style of many of them. We have plenty of time this year together though so I hope I can help all of you improve!
