I grew up in New Zealand with a Black man. I spent the first five years of my life with a Black man living in exile. This Black man cut ties with his Black family 25 years before I was born, his mother, his brother, his sisters, his first son. This Black man was stolen from his Black mother in 1941 at age eight and taken to Parramatta Boys Home. This Black man returned to live with his people on Inglebah reserve until the age of 16. In 1969, this Black man went to visit his mother in Surry Hills after bumping into his sister at Redferns Empress Hotel, but his mother wasnt there. This Black man took charcoal from the fire place and wrote on a piece of card board NORMAN WAS HERE, leaving this message for his mother before he flew out to New Zealand the next morning. This Black man changed his name. This Black man kept his name change papers in a wooden box under lock and key, sealed with packing tape, tucked at the back of a wardrobe for more than three decades. NORMAN IS HERE, BECAUSE NORMAN IS ME.
