I had a meeting with one of Zachs teachers last week. She had been dismissive about his paper about his career plans. I explained to her he already is a musician - she asked about his plan b? I said he doesnt have a plan b. Now she is a little dismissive about my parenting skills. Maybe she is right. When I was my kids age, the things that mattered most to me: 1. playing music 2. writing 3. photography I thought my best option for those was moving to San Francisco, meeting Lawrence Ferlinghetti and then everything else would fall into place over time. At 55, those things are still on my mind and I wonder what would have happened had sense and sensibility not overtaken my life and I trod the path of earning a check and going into debt. Ive never pushed my kids toward a path but allowed them to find their way and supported to the best of my ability their journey. Some are still critical of the way Ive handled this.... sometimes I feel guilty for not doing things differently... but this morning during a little prayer time before church this thought pricked me On a hope and a prayer my daughter moved to San Francisco before she was 22. My son is a drummer without a plan B. My kids inspire me, Im proud of them and I love them more than anything. Dont save anything for the swim back! youtube/watch?v=yRynilqRXwI
