I had the honor and the horror of going to a cemetery that is - TopicsExpress

I had the honor and the horror of going to a cemetery that is supposed to be the oldest cemetery in Macon County. This is out south southwest of Shorter, AL. Now there are only a handful of undisturbed graves. I say it that way because of the horror of what happened there. You see when some county or state workers needed some fill dirt several years back, they did not realize that the perfect spot to dig had been used over a hundred years before! They dug out a huge ravine before an informed resident of the area ran to stop them! Tombstones and remains were dug up and used for fill dirt. The powers that be did nothing to return the remains, so now all that is left is a huge 6 to 8 foot deep area and the a few undisturbed residents. The original name was the Cubahatchie Baptist Church of Christ Cemetery also called the Shackelford Cemetery and the Turner Cemetery I will not disclose the exact location of this cemetery as enough damage has been done Griffin, John 28 Nov 1798-28 May 1847 Roney, Carrie 20 Nov 1851-30 Jan 1905 d/o William C. and M.
