I had the privilege of visiting one of the meetings at the Tribecca Coffeehouse on a Wednesday morning in New York and meeting Makoto Fujimura and it was such a blessing. Serious artists interested in caring for our culture are encouraged to watch this video and get connected by contacting him directly for upcoming events coordinated by International Arts Movement. Artists are very sensitive creatures. We kind of intuit the world and whats going on and the world is a fragmented place full of damage so when we go out, we are sure to get bombarded by that sense of the world. In some ways you cant avoid that...we intuit, assimilate, take in through the senses but also spiritually. We are highly sensitized to feel this deeply flawed and painful world and we end up, often times, being part of it, even being damaged by it. We cant seem to get out of that cycle of negativity or we might end up in despair as many artists are known to do. So when we talk about culture care and caring for an artists, caring for culture at large I think we have to start their with this admission of brokenness, of darkness which is absolutely overwhelming.
