I happen to believe the bible is the battle cry of fundamentalism. - TopicsExpress

I happen to believe the bible is the battle cry of fundamentalism. The problem with that is, so do I, and so do over 20,000 other denominations and varying streams of Christianity today. They all feel that they believe the bible. And theyre right. They all do. Theyve all chosen a verse or two that they deem to be the most poignant for their doctrinal stance and those verses are what theyre referring to when they say I believe the bible. Friends this is the problem with proof texting. We can preach literally anything from justified rape to the subjugation of women out of the bible and every stance can be backed with a few cherry picked verses. So what are we to do? I firmly believe that Jesus is to be the litmus test that every revelation must pass. If it cant go through his teaching, revelation of his father or how he acted then there is good chance it ought to at least be shelved (if not done away with all together). This would be why we cant write Jesus off as an old covenant minister. Jesus certainly ministered under the old covenant but he was revealing the kingdom of heaven in our midst (which btw is the new covenant heaven on earth). To dismiss his teachings and simply say we are under a new covenant is to do away with the kingdom all together. Drop the proof texts. Look to the Son of God. It may be uncomfortable to lose a few dogmas but if all theyre founded on is a few cherry picked verses they need to be let go of.
