I have been trying to read up all I can on the Appaloosa gene, so - TopicsExpress

I have been trying to read up all I can on the Appaloosa gene, so far I have got that it is a complex gene but that ALL appys must have the Varnish gene and that Varnish can have no spots but must show at least 2 characteristics ie mottling, striped hooves and or sclera. To get patterning they must also have the gene PATN1 or PATN2, this will give the leopard pattern or with PATN2 the blanket, snowcap or fewspot ... just to condense the multitude that I have read lol What I cant seem to find is: does the gene carry? I always thought that once a horse does not have the gene ( as in TESTED negative) he/she cannot throw a appy even if it is in their background? is this correct? And for a horse to be appy whether it be Varnish/leopard or whatever at least 1 parent must also have that gene? Is this correct? or have I got it wrong
