I have been very encouraged recently in my travels around the electorate of Bulleen. Not only do I have a fantastic core of campaign volunteers (without whom I am certain my campaign would not be as successful as it is), but I have been very much enjoying the opportunity to provide a sympathetic ear to the people of Bulleen. The overwhelming majority of people that speak to me are very unhappy with the state of affairs under the Napthine Liberal government. Even when people who are very open with their support for the Liberal party express to me that they are very happy that there is a Labor candidate for the Bulleen area that takes the time to stop and listen to what their concerns are. In many of these conversations, I hear that people are upset with how the education system is being severely damaged under this government, and I hear people tell me that they are upset at how the government is treating our ambulance drivers. I feel that health and education are two of the most important aspects of our way of life in Australia, and when I express this to the people that I have been talking to, many of them leave the conversation having second thoughts about whom they will be giving their vote to on November 29th. It is these one-on-one conversations that I love the most about being a candidate. There are people who feel that their voices are not being heard, and I feel so privileged to provide an opportunity for these people to have their voices heard. If nothing else, I feel it is the most important part of entering politics. Too often it seems that there are members of this government who will do anything and everything just to maintain their grip on power (including providing protection for MPs like Geoff Shaw), including the current Premier. I feel that getting in touch with the people that they seek to represent in Parliament would do many members of the current government a world of good, and would help to restore some of the pride and dignity of politics as it is viewed in the public.
