I have literally thousands of fb (abolitionist) friends that could have sent me in a winning essay for my present giveaway, but did not. I could tell that they didnt approve but no one told me why. I figured it out yesterday....it must be about promoting commercialism, capitalism, expensive vegan items...The Academic Abolitionist Vegan clued me into it from a post I read from them. Okay fair enough - I am personally so unmaterialistic and a minimalist. I probably have less things than anyone I know. I have never spent $200 on a clutch or pair of shoes - in fact I have not spent $200 on my entire wardrobe in 15 years...I kid you not. But I figured not all vegans are like me - were all different and someone might appreciate certain items. If you think about it - vegan items are making it easier for mainstream to be vegan - vegan businesses are a good thing. It has made it easier for me and a feeling of not being deprived to have vegan, fair-trade, organic chocolate bars, for example - even though it is consumerism....not a necessity of life. I will have a very hard time trying to choose only 50-53 winners out of the hundreds of possible winning essays I have already received. Thank-you everyone who participated in this campaign - it will be a beautiful special feature, a compilation of 50 essays on why they will always be vegan ... and it will be online to counteract all the many ex-vegan posts and shed a light on what it really means to be vegan, which eludes so many - even people who refer to themselves as vegan.
