I just received a message from someone I friended a while ago, but - TopicsExpress

I just received a message from someone I friended a while ago, but with whom I’ve never spoken before today. The reason she’d never spoken to me is my surname, which it seems not only she, but several of our mutual friends, thought was obscene. I’d like to clear the air. My surname is pronounced dǝ-fyūks′. It is not a name I chose for myself; rather, it is the name by which I was called in a teenage dream, in which I was a girl. Apparently someone recognized me, as this person called out to me as I stood in a large, open space, completely content with my feminine self. In the ensuing years, I have learned that “der fuchs” is German for “the fox.” (I don’t speak more than about three words of German.) So, my name is effectively “Kristi the Fox.” I have also learned that a degenerative cornea disease I have, pellucid marginal degeneration, is quite similar to another condition called “Fuchs Dystrophy.” So perhaps I was being forewarned? Whatever the case, I would like to reiterate: my surname is most certainly NOT pronounced like the vile, four-letter word it resembles. Thank you.
