I love reading. Love it. If you have ever paid me a visit – its likely you’ve seen my book shelves. Hundreds of books in my collection, and growing. My love of reading and my appreciation for a fine piece of literature is in part due to my grade school librarian - Ms. SMILES (from GALLISTEL). Boy, we sure made her mad a few times. We drove her nuts. She use to wear this nifty scarves that she tied as bows. She wore silk shirts, and her hair curled. She likely used pin curls every night. She taught me how to use the DEWEY DECIMAL system with true artistic precision. More than that, she truly took pride in her book readings. She had these dope hand puppets to go with every book (Harry the Dirty Dog – the Dog was made of felt and she would attach black spots to him while she read to us). Every year she held a book fair, and it provided opportunity for me to buy some of my favorites reads; BABY SITTERS CLUB, or a CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE BOOK, or SWEET VALLEY HIGH! These little memories are so important to me now, because it was a series of accidental opportunities/ encounters that have led to my greatness. Meeting these educators who truly legitimately gave a damn about US. I’ve had quite a few teachers who have contributed to my life. I wish I can thank them. It’s likely Ms. Smiles has passed, and I wish I could tell her how awesome she was. How she read with so much fervor that it taught me to be equally as passionate about reading. Educators do not get enough credit, they can truly Have a positive (or negative) effect on your life. GALLISTEL LANGUAGE ACADEMY– had some amazing teachers; Ms. Graham, Ms. Baker, Ms. Marshall, Mr. JACKSON! Even Ms . Shavers was enthusiastic about math.
