I love this red herring from the far left about how raising the rent allowance cap would somehow end homelessness, and their use of Labours refusal to do so as a stick to beat the Party with - its absolute bollocks from people who havent the slightest, tiniest idea of what they are actually talking about in this instance. If the rent allowance cap was raised, base rent at that level would be raised proportionally literally overnight - the tenant wouldnt see any benefit, the net effect of it would be that landlords get richer (the irony of the likes of the SWP pushing for something that would do this is hilarious to me), thats it. Furthermore, the base rent level rising would push rent up across the sector, squeezing the middle-range further and effectively pricing a lot of people out. It wouldnt take a single person off the streets - of course thats not really the point anyway, as long as it provides a stick to beat Labour with thats all that matters. You dont have to trust me on this one, but I have been working in this sector for about 10 years at this stage - far longer than the far left have half-arsedly claimed to have any interest in it.
