I notice that many of my friends on Facebook have expressed shock and awe over Piyush Mishras and some other artists support for Narendra Bhai Modi. I dont understand the shock and awe. What do you expect? It is at the time of such moral crisis that you get to identify the grit (or the lack of it) of people. There will always be erosion of base of liberals. It is time proven truth. Have you ever seen erosion of base in Fascist rank? Even after bloodbath, Fascist supporters just wait in the wings. They never get to see their mistakes. This is unheard of. Then why this bewilderment? It is true that artists have remained at the forefront of resistance all over the world. But we seem to give them too much credit. It is also equally true that at the time of moral crisis, artists are first to be appropriated in the Fascist ranks. Unlike the rest of the population, one does not have to wag the finger to appropriate them. Their ranks are full of invertebrates. They will meekly follow you. Hitler did it successfully. Stalin did it brilliantly. So did Mussolini, Pinochet, Shah Reza and Pol Pot. Piyush Mishra and others are merely following this long glorious tradition. So dont lament. There is another way of dealing with it. A couple of days back, I got hold of an old diary of mine, which I started to keep in 1998 when BJP came to power. I used to write down the names of such artists, activists and so called liberals who were falling over each other to appropriate themselves to Vajpayee and ilk. I saw an entry that I made in 1999 about Dalai Lama. That loony toon of a leader requested an alliance of Hinduism, Buddhism and Eastern religions against Islam and Christianity. I did not express shock then, I just made that entry. Another entry in June 2000 is about some Muslim leaders like Agha Roohi, Yasub Abbas and some others from what was then called Vajpayee Himayat Committee. Again no shock, just names I entered. After BJP was kicked out of power, whenever anyone of these slimy creatures ever started to sound even remotely liberal, I used to unleash my fury. Showing them the entry with the date it was made. So dont express shock and awe. The moral crisis has returned. The erosion of base has started. It will only intensify in days to come. Keep a diary. Record the names of slimy turncoats. Wait! Wait patiently! Our time will come. Well pose uncomfortable questions to Madhu Kishwars and Piyush Mishras of this world. It is not an admission of defeat. It is the essential caution that liberals dont take.
