I really hope you take three minutes to read this, because I spent about 40 minutes writing it. I will admit that I dont know much about politics, but hopefully that will change within the next few years. I would love to hear some responses from you guys. So watching that video of Russell Brand talking about revolution(which everyone should watch) on BBC made me think of something. We are now living in this internet age with its seemingly endless capabilities for national and global communication. Does this mean that in the near future traditional political campaigns will no longer be efficient or even necessary? Thanks to youtube, facebook, and other social media a person can get their ideas heard on a large scale with little financial backing. Do you think that twenty years from now we should see that political candidates who are able to get into office will no longer be mostly well-off people who were able to put large amounts of money in their campaign? Should we be seeing more people make it into office due to their intelligence or how well their ethical standards reflect that of the people, rather than how much money or charisma they have? Maybe we finally have the chance to test out the age old argument of whether our votes actually matter. Imagine a future that has more and more candidates gaining huge amounts of popularity over the internet despite a lack of wealth. People who are well educated in political science and economic philosophy. People who are willing to take swift action to relieve suffering around the world. But if we still find that those who get into office are those with the deepest pockets, who continue to make decisions in the interest of people that are already very well off rather than those who dont have the means for survival, does that mean that our government truly is by the people, for the people? I believe humanity has been blessed with its new found ability to communicate. Whether our integrity uses this to relieve suffering or our selfishness uses it to isolate ourselves and do nothing about it is up to us.
