I remember the days i was still only allowed to use my BB gun. I so wanted to shoot that 22 rifle but my father acted like it was a machine gun or something and he would not let me touch it. When i was old enough to give up the BB gun my father bought me a pellet gun and I was still not allowed to shoot the .22 cal. After i proved myself with the pellet gun for a while he began to teach me about how dangerous the .22 can be. That gun concerned him the most of any that he owned because it is smaller, it does not recoil or make a loud repeat. The only gun he disliked more was the handgun and he never allowed one in the house other than one that shot BBs. He said handguns were unnecessarily dangerous and i totally agree. Anything we needed to do we could take care of with the shotgun and we never had to worry about a little kid accidentally shooting a shotgun because they were big, heavy, and kept unloaded. My father spent more time training me on the .22 cal rifle than any other. How far the bullet can actually travel, visually inspecting the full trajectory, how long it takes to reach maximum distance, and how that small round can be lethal. Most importantly he drilled into me how that gun can lull you into a false sense of security because it does not feel like you are shooting a deadly weapon but it almost feels like a toy. He said that once you make a mistake with a gun you can never take it back. You cannot undo accidentally killing someone because you lost focus. I have heard many times since then that, ohhhh it is just a little .22, he cant do much damage with that. BULLSHIT! Now combine that with giving ownership to a young child and coloring the gun a pink or blue so it feels even more like a toy. That is an accident waiting to happen and it is not worth the risk.
