I saw a friends status: Why should I be proud of being a Bangladeshi? Im gonna tell you a few brief moments in my life that had more impact on me than I realized at the time. A few months ago I was taking a CNG from Gulshan to Uttara and didnt have change for 500. The driver was an old dude and kinda looked like my Nana (grandfather). When we got there, he didnt have any change. It was pretty late at night so I said keep it. He genuinely got sad and said I cant. I was like huh? This is a first... I said why? He said because I dont want u to hold a grudge and think ill of me I was surprised, got a little emotional. So I hugged him and said I promise I wont. I was on Emirates coming from Dubai to Dhaka and fell asleep on the flight. Dude next to me was Bangladeshi and didnt know any English. Few hours later when the food cart arrived, the attendant gave him his meal and skipped me, kept going. He immediately reached over me tugged her sleeve... She boisterously says SIR!... He got nervous and kept pointing at my tray... I woke up from all that realizing what happened... I told her Chill, hes just looking out for me. I was in a taxi in New York and the driver kept looking at me through the rearview mirror. I said where are u from? He said Bangladesh. I said me too. He said, and I kid u not, bhai, onek din pore ekjon desher manush pailam, apni jodi kichu mone na koren, apnar shathe duita kotha bole mon ta ektu halka kortam... I ended up hearing the life story of a struggling husband and father of two whos alone in US, supporting his family in Bangladesh. Guys, the point Im trying to make is pride comes in all shapes and sizes. To me its really not about knowing stats, history, or transgressions. For me its little moments like those when you rediscover yourself at the root level against all the superficiality and realize what you stand for. At those moments, you actually feel prides presence.
