I still run no virus protection, since its been over 10 years since I have had one.. and that was from software I ran on a dedicated box (kazaa, bearshare) because it was known to infect your computer. This is a real virus. It is protected the same ways that have kept me safe: Dont open stupid things. Pretty simple. New operating systems have isolated out what has permissions to run and what doesnt. It takes you giving this thing permission to install/run. Dont run free scanners, or optimizers. There is no need to download something free you didnt need yesterday. (In fact, I recommend doing a full wipe of a windows box back to factory fresh every 6mths-year[i do yearly]) Backup important files. There are plenty of free storage sites to store most of your personal pictures and info for free. It wont handle your 10Tb of downloaded movies, yet. I feel like it is still 1990. Reminding people to backup their work, and dont run unknown code on your box. I guess people really dont get smarter. snopes/computer/virus/cryptolocker.asp
