I thought I would take a trip down memory lane. It was required reading when Sandra and I moved to Hawaii in June 1969. When I got there and started teaching, Sandra got me to go to the NAUI (National Association of Underwater Instructors) Hell Week our first summer, 1970. From that, I ran into one of the characters from the film Hawaii. Names momentarily a blank, he played Charlton Hestons first officer, a bearded sailor. Soon after I got my diving instructors ticket, I found myself hanging out with a whole passel of character players in the films being made on the Islands at the time. A bunch of beach bums, pirates and scoundrels all of us. The film Tora, Tora, Tora! featured a colonel who tells a general who was played by Jason Robards, Jr. why the radar to warn of enemy planes cant be put on top of the mountains. Another diving instructor friend who spent plenty of time in casting offices to get on film. It was in a lot of ways a small community then. So I ended up being drinking buddies with Marlon Brando raising Maine Lobster in Tahiti, another strange adventure of a misspent youth, and hanging around with Jack Lord and Brian Keith. Who came my house one night to buy a puppy from me, Miki was there and it blew her mind that this old mossback diving instructor had big name movie stars for friends. Now I need to see if it ever really happened the way I remember, or whether I made it all up as I went along. Still there are a few photos around here somewhere.
