I used to see Michael Jackson a lot when I worked in the hotels while going to school. First in Memphis where I was the doorman at the Hyatt and the last of many times when I worked as a bellman at the Disneyland Hotel. I spent about an hour or more with him the last time hanging out and trying to get him to go skiing with us on a trip to Mammoth the following weekend. He kept saying no, thanks and I kept pestering him about how fun it was going to be. Finally annoyed to death with me he said, No, Robert! Im a dancer. I couldnt afford to break my leg or something. To which I thought, Michael Jackson is mad at me. How cute is that? It was just a matter of weeks later that this video came out and I thought, Holy Bajeezus! If I could dance like that? Screw skiing! The next time he was in the hotel things were very different. I think it was Janine Bear that told me when I came into work that he was there. I ran upstairs to his room to find a gigantic pair of crossed arms where the door should have been. I invented the moonwalk that night. What amazes me looking back is that at the time we were hanging out last, he would have just finished all this work. The album Thriller done and being pressed by the millions. The video done and Vincent Price back home safe and sound long ago. And yet Michael was chilled. Relaxed, hanging out with some dumbass bellman he knew at the Disneyland Hotel. I miss that guy.
