I want to dedicate this song to my grandmother Mary Petrasik. She died yesterday. My grandmother, a first generation Slovak, gave birth to two strong, beautiful women named Marybeth and Bonnie (my mother). Marybeth has died of breast cancer and she raised a strong, beautiful boy named Jacob. Its not grandmas death however, that is pouring through my thoughts and feelings. Its her legacy. My mother participates directly in the sea of life. She is not a bystander. She is fair. And she asserts this fairness and this concern for others to the world. My mother learned this from Mary, my grandmother. My mother Bonnie had two children, Michelle and I. Michelle’s engagement with other people is beautiful. The way in which Michelle asks questions… Questions that reveal her curiosity and interest in the person standing next to her are profound. Michelle inspires and nurtures dialogue. She listens and then shares. My sister Michelle learned to listen and to ask questions and to engage with other people through my mother… And of course my mother learned from her mother Mary (my grandmother). Mary, Marybeth and Bonnie asserted and assert their humanity to the world. And so although I’m sad and I’m crying… I also know with clarity that my grandma is very much alive...Through the values and the interactions that flow through her to the loved ones in my life. I am touched everyday by the love and values of my grandmother… And therefore the spirit of my grandmother continues to grow and to flourish. I’m glad that Mary has passed. It was her time to go. But I’m more joyful that Mary thrives among her loved ones – and those that they touch – every day.
