I was a tad miffed with one of my doctors today who was in speaking to me with my surgeon. Im still a wee bit breathless as my haemoglobin hasnt quite reached normal yet (creeping up by about 10 points every week - it normally takes 120 days after a transplant). The surgeon was happy with the way its going, but the other consultant suggested eating more meat and dared to shake is head when I said I was vegan. He scoffed What about liver. Is that out the question? I kept my cool and just replied it was still part of a dead animal and that I was perfectly clued up on how to get iron from vegan sources e.g. spinach, pulses and nuts. I added that the haemoglobin is continuing to rise at a normal rate, so I was just really answering the question about how Im doing. (I didnt add that I hadnt asked for his effing opinion or advice, as I was determined not to lose the rag! :-P ) The surgeon nicely told him to cool it and chuckled that I should drink some Guinness, trying to make light of it all. Its the first time that Ive encountered someone saying anything. All other doctors and staff have always been perfectly supportive and non-judgemental. In fact, theyve been really happy that Ive recovered so quickly. Other than that, all is fine. So, I just really want to get that off my chest! :-P
