I was misinterpreted by political opponents – Shema Category: Lead stories Published on Friday, 21 November 2014 05:01 Written by Habibu Umar Aminu, Katsina Hits: 664 Governor Ibrahim Shema Governor Ibrahim Shema of Katsina State yesterday said he was misinterpreted in the video clip where he likened opponents to cockroaches who deserve to be crushed, describing it as political witch hunt aimed at discrediting his reputation. Shema who was reacting to the heavy criticisms that trailed the video clip which has gone viral, noted he was only trying to tell people to avoid bad things as he has never instigated anyone into violence. Speaking on a Voice of America Hausa programme monitored in Katsina, the governor said: “That is not the only statement I made but due to political mischief, other parts were edited out, but I want to clear myself. I stand on my earlier statement that all politicians must strive according to the tenets of democracy, follow its rules and principles, this is my stand and call to the people. “One must understand that this is not the only statement I made that day, I spoke at length going down history lane on what we have been able to achieve. You are aware that videos are doctored to suit one’s interest; it’s nothing new,” he said. Shema said: “I said the PDP has played an important role in Katsina and called on all to enjoy our free education, roads, water and many other needs. In 2011 a lot of misgivings happened like opposition engaging youths in political thuggery, even a boy was killed in Dan Musa because he raised the PDP flag; his hand was cut off, and nothing was done about it. It calls for great concern as a leader, that is why I said we cannot condone this kind of situation anymore, security agencies must rise to the situation. “They didn’t say this, what they are shouting about is politicking, I didn’t say opposition or aspirant. I asked what is the position of cockroaches in one’s house? I don’t know they will be making such comments because anyone that knows me well, knows that I am against political thuggery. I intended to explain to people to avoid what is not good, I have never instigated anyone to go the violent way since I have been governor for seven and half years,” he said.
