I was pleased to join the Divine-9 Die-in Facebook group this past week. The group, consisting of thousands of members of Black Greek Letter Organizations across America, has united in the wake of the Ferguson, Missouri and Staten Island grand jury decisions to both protest the grand jury process and to remind the world that #blacklivesmatter. Today at 3 pm, there will be a massive die in across America where not only BGLO members and black alumni will gather, but hopefully all people of good will who agree that black lives, indeed, matter. The cities where protests are confirmed are: Charlotte Tampa Detroit Orlando West Palm Beach Nashville Chicago Oakland Washington DC New York Los Angeles As a member of a Divine-9 organization (Kappa Alpha Psi) but more importantly, as a concerned citizen, I applaud all of those who already have been peacefully protesting across the country this week, including the Dream Defenders down here in Florida who are led by D-9 member Phillip Agnew (Alpha Phi Alpha). Somewhere in Heaven, I am sure that the ancestors are proud that there is a collective cry for change and that those cries are being led in many areas by their young fraters and sorors. If you attend and happen to find yourself under arrest, remember the tactics of the old SCLC and CORE protests of the 60s---relax, allow yourself to be cuffed, and keep silent.
