I was reminded earlier today that it was nine years ago on this date that I returned home from the hospital following a 15-hour surgery, four days of induced coma, and another week and a half of onsite healing time, all in an effort to eradicate cancer from my head and neck. Until reminded, I did not remember that Halloween was in any way involved. I DO remember that upon walking through the front door of my home, immediately facing the mirror on the opposite wall, I stated (or tried to state, anyway) that I looked like Pumpkin Head, such was the size of my swollen noggin at the time. And I remember, too, that in the day or two leading up to my escape, the nurses replaced the icebags situated around my neck with surgical gloves, filled with water and then frozen, so that while they did the job of the other icebags, they appeared to be in the act of strangling me. (Whether or not this was a commentary about my behavior while under their care, I cannot say.) Nine years later and, to be honest, there are residual effects, not all of them physical. Still, as frightening as prospects seemed at the time, it is a treat to be here!
