I was talking to a community college vet. representative at a state school regarding a new program for veterans, designed (supposedly) to get them back to work. There is a certain amount of money set aside for this program and there is a limit as to how many veterans can qualify for this. The program curriculum was not very diverse and certifications were slim pickings. So basically a vet qualifies for this program, works hard to obtain the schooling, and more than likely will not get a job. (There are some exceptions.) It does not make sense to me. It is as if they are putting the cart before the horse. Why set someone up for failure? Why not connect the employment-looking-veteran with a company that is willing to hire him or her while he or she pursues the diploma, certificate or program? Baffling. Maybe it is simply to dump millions more dollars into the state-run schools and not for the benefit of the veterans. Just food for thought.
