I went into the Covered California Healthcare Exchange to see what insurance will cost if it’s not covered by your employer. Basically pricing is progressive, meaning you will pay more if you make more The cheapest plan is the Bronze 60 under Anthem Blue Cross A family of two making 40K would pay 128$/mo. A family of two making 120K would pay 453$/mo Preventative care is completely covered, such as yearly physicals, mammograms etc… which is good. However the yearly deductible is 5000$ (yikes) PCP Copay is 60$, Specialist $70, ER $300 Urgent Care Co-Pay is 120$ (Most people use this when they come down with a nasty flu) You pay 30% of negotiated in network pay for imaging 50$ preferred brand copay after drug deductible (Does preferred brand mean no generics?) Maximum out of pocket for Family $12700 This is seriously going to hurt lower income people (eg. Part time work) , especially older folks, they will have to choose between the cheap plan or the fancy more expense plan, how is this affordable. Does it really matter if you get a tax break when you will have to pay over the top copayments and deductibles. No wonder they are trying to push this across college campuses because they are the ones who will hardly use the insurance and they can use them to claim how great the ACA is when they get their free condoms, birth control pills and antibiotics when they come down with an STI Also why is there only 3 companies (Anthem, Health Net, Blue Shield). This is monopolistic, why doesn’t the government lift regulation and allow more competition. This would lower costs. My analysis, is that the Affordable Care Act is purposely meant to fail. Once it fails, the government will grandstand and act as the savior and push to implement Universal Single Payer Healthcare as a solution. I predict this will happen under a Republican administration, so they can sell the idea to their constituents. As for Universal Healthcare, that is another topic of discussion.
