I went out to AAM&W yesterday late afternoon and took a tour of the facility and also had an in-depth conversation with Scott McDonald about the photos I posted yesterday. here is the result of my visit..... The kennels were all clean, very few had poop in them plus there was no diarrhea !! There was very little odor !!! Scott stated that many thing were being done to improve conditions for the pets plus improving previous cleaning protocol including trying several different methods to control the flies, different products to kill diseases and germs. getting new doors installed and cracks in cement repaired. Scott also stated the addition of two more employees (starting any day) whos only job will be to keep the kennels clean and sanitary so hopefully pictures like I posted yesterday will not be an issue. The bottom line is all these conditions didnt just appear and so they are not going to be repaired overnight. I voiced my concerns over not only what I felt but what many others animal activist also feel is that we were being ignored by the city in our plight to improve conditions for the homeless pets, raise adoptions and lower eu rates. He assured me we were not being ignored and all this takes time. (government bureaucracy ) Scott I feel indeed cares and he is trying to improve conditions for the pets. He is keeping them longer then the allotted 72 hours and is working very hard with local rescue groups. I also feel that certain changes are a must !!! We must have a Veterinarian on staff plus also a clinic on location. We must isolate the puppies from the general pet population where they can be viewed through an observation window and only visited by adoptees in a designated room where puppies are the only pets allowed in there. We must set up a volunteer program where the use of the community to help is an asset not a liability, as I presented to both Scott and our city elected officials. We must enact a voluntarily pet license program, which will make all of the above possible without causing a tax increase to our citizens. I think there are many caring and dedicated employees at the shelter and I feel it will take time to get everyone trained and on the same page as to what the needs are at the shelter. If you see items that need attention at the shelter my recommendation is to let the front staff or a kennel tech know what is happening along with the kennel # so they will be sure and go to the right kennel. if you are going to be there for awhile then go back and double check to make sure it was taken care of, If not ask to speak to Scott McDonald and rest assure he will make sure it is corrected. As you can see from these photos the runs are clean and the pets look healthy. I promise you I would much rather post these type of pictures then the ones yesterday
