I went to the theater today to see a movie that I have been looking forward to. Im a bit of a physics and astronomy geek, so the opening of Interstellar is something Ive been avidly anticipating. I decided to splurge and see it on an IMAX screen, and Im glad I did. A small work of warning...do not go to see this if youre anticipating Star Wars, or Star Trek. This is not a fantasy action movie. It is primarily a drama centered around the premise that at some unspecified point in the future (Im assuming it was 40-50 years) the Earth is in ecological collapse, and billions are dying. The prognosis is that the world and all its inhabitants will die in less than a century. I wont get into the details, but a wormhole has been discovered near Saturn, and probes have sent back information about potentially habitable planets in a different galaxy billions of light years on the other side. Matthew McConaughey leaves his family to pilot an exploratory ship through the wormhole in an effort to find a new home and rescue humanity. The movie can be a bit tedious at points, but overall the plot is very entertaining, the science is quite good (well known astrophysicist Kip Thorne is one of the producers of the movie, as well as the designer of the special effects pertaining to black holes and wormholes), the story enjoyable, the cast excellent, and the special effects are superb. If you plan to see this, do yourself a favor and dont wait to watch it on DVD. This one needs to be seen on a big screen! In my opinion it was well worth the admission. youtube/watch?v=0vxOhd4qlnA
