I wrote an essay this morning! What do you think friends? A five point essay, why Robocop was a great movie, and not a simple re-make Although there has already been a Robocop film previously produced, 1987, that is not reason enough to judge and compare the recent release of Robocop. Before reading the essay below as to why the more recent Robocop is a great movie, the reader is advised to wipe any memory or knowledge of any other Robocop movie, and to look at this 2014 film on its own. So with a clean slate, the essay. Five points covering the strengths of the film: action packed, superb acting talent, political criticism, existentialist theory, and a solid story line. Yes, Robocop is action packed. Most of the action is computer generated, but not all of it. Film starts with good ol fashion shoot out, and there are a slew of other shoot outs, motorcycle chases, etc. which do not include CGI (computer generated imagery). In most viewers opinions, CGI should only be used if there is no alternative, not as a means to an end. Well, huge cyborg robots and gating totting droids are not easily available, use of CGI there is understood and forgiven. In conclusion, the action kicks ass (literally) so enjoyably. The superb acting in this film is.. superb. The lead role played by Joel Kinnanman was done very believably, not much to say there other than that he nailed it. But the casting of Micheal Keaton, Gary Oldman, and Samuel Jackson are what really made this film come alive; delivering political satire and ideas of human existentialism. Micheal Keaton was excellent in his role as the head of OCP. Ive been a fan of his for a while, and he plays evil masterminds to a T. See Pacific Heights, opposite Melanie Griffith 1990. Gary Oldman is sensitive, yet shrewd enough to play the role of the ethically torn head scientist, God character. His marksmanship as that character was flawless, believable all the way through. Samuel L Jackson gets pissed off, in lieu of Pulp Fiction memories, hes great to get pissed off, and his ways of displaying political sarcasm in his role was done very naturally. That brings us to the political satire of the film. Starting off in Iran with a news film crew covering Operation Freedom Iran [sic] we can already see the Robocop creator team poking fun, bringing to light US imperialism in the near present, future. Then, with Samuel Jacson as Pat Novak, the outspoken-fascist-government backed news reporter, again the team with Robocop is shedding light on how our own news culture is manipulated by those already in power. See how the 9-11 stories were covered, see how somethings make the news and other stories dont. This has been going on since news reporting existed, Roman era, but it is important that every generation know, the news isnt the entire truth. Thank you Robocop for enlightening the youth! Funny it took a film like this to do it. Next point, the existentialist angle of Robocop 2014. Where to begin with this? Well, if you dont already know what existentialism is, its basically the idea that humans have an innate understanding and feeling, beyond what we may be conscious of. The idea of a soul, how we store and acquire knowledge, morality in the face of reason, these are all ideas outlined in this school of though. Check out wikipedia.org for more, you should. Films starring robot/cyborgs since the beginning of film have touched on these theories; Metropolis (1927), Bladerunner (1982), Irobot (2004), etc. Robocop stands strong in this. Do robots have souls? Why do humans make ethical decisions? Can a half man/half machine have a soul and make decisions against reason? In asking these questions, we can look back and into ourselves. I AM NOT GOING TO GO MUCH DEEPER INTO THIS ARGUMENT, SEE ROBOCOP AND MAKE THE CONNECTION YOURSELF, its your duty. Finally, Robocop was a great film, could be a classic, because it did a job to EDUCATE. Every generation needs a film like this, to speak about what makes me me (existentialism) and about the current political state What is REALLY going on in the world/ with my government? Robocop 2014 touches on and explains these ideas while under the Trojan Horse disguise as a simple cop movie. If you havent already seen this film, see it. If you havent seen the 1987 film, see that one after seeing this. In Robocop monotone, Thank you for your time. Have a nice day. copyright Colin Trent Johnson #robocop #robocop2014
