INIS is currently designing some very in-depth Compensatory Habitat Management Plans (CHMP) for hen harriers in Counties Cork, Clare, Waterford and Kerry as part of major wind farm applications. These CHMPs will see huge areas of ground managed for hen harriers for the lifetime of each project. The allocations of each land parcel are accurately estimated using GIS mapping and habitat assessments and management prescriptions range from low intensity forestry management such as keeping forestry in check to intensive management where coniferous forestry is felled and heath reinstated. We are working closely in consultation with NPWS on a CHMP at the moment that will see over 400 hectares managed for hen harriers at one wind farm site alone. Monitoring all compensatory habitat areas and recording hen harrier activity over the coming years will allow us to measure the performance of each management prescription and each management area. If you need assistance in designing a CHMP for hen harriers please contact us at +353 65 6842465 or [email protected]
