Ibn Umar reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, when the Jews greet you they say death be upon you, so say: And upon you.” Source: Sahih Bukhari 6529, Grade: Sahih (authentic) according to Al-Bukhari Ibn Al-Qayyim said, “Some of the scholars said it was permissible to initiate the greeting of peace with the people of the Book in order to attain some benefit or need, or if it is feared he will be harmed, or if it is intended to maintain family relations, or something else like that… And it was the guidance of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, that if he was greeted by anyone with peace, then he would return the greeting to whomever gave it.” Source: Zaad Al-Ma’ad 388 ابْنَ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّ الْيَهُودَ إِذَا سَلَّمُوا عَلَى أَحَدِكُمْ إِنَّمَا يَقُولُونَ سَامٌ عَلَيْكَ فَقُلْ عَلَيْكَ 6529 صحيح البخاري كِتَاب اسْتِتَابَةِ الْمُرْتَدِّينَ وَالْمُعَانِدِينَ وَقِتَالِهِمْ إن الله رفيق يحب الرفق في الأمر كله قلت أولم تسمع ما قالوا قال قلت وعليكم قال ابن القيم وَقَالَتْ طَائِفَةٌ يَجُوزُ الِابْتِدَاءُ لِمَصْلَحَةٍ رَاجِحَةٍ مِنْ حَاجَةٍ تَكُونُ لَهُ إِلَيْهِ أَوْ خَوْفٍ مِنْ أَذَاهُ أَوْ لِقَرَابَةٍ بَيْنَهُمَا أَوْ لِسَبَبٍ يَقْتَضِي ذَلِكَ … وَكَانَ مِنْ هَدْيِهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا بَلَّغَهُ أَحَدٌ السَّلَامَ عَنْ غَيْرِهِ أَنْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى الْمُبَلِّغِ 388 زاد المعاد في هدي خير العباد فصول في هديه صلى الله عليه وسلم في العبادات
