If I needed any proof of just how smart Ilse is, I now have - TopicsExpress

If I needed any proof of just how smart Ilse is, I now have it. A few months back I bought a Gentle Leader (aka halti) for Maggie, but she never quite got the hang of it and fought it every time I put it on her. So I tucked it away and only used it in situations where I needed lot of control, such as taking her back and forth to the dog park, or into pet stores. So today I pulled it out and used it to take her into Petco, and she fought it the entire time. Well, when I went to take Ilse for a walk tonight I decided to try it because shes been getting worse and worse with the pulling despite repeated training sessions. Ive never used it on her because I had never needed it, but I figured why not try it? When I put it on, she had a rather violent reaction, the same as Maggie. She actually flipped herself over twice trying to get it off, but I was patient and managed to get her walking in a short time. Once we got going, it didnt take her more than a few yards to figure it out: I pull, it tightens. I dont pull, it loosens. Within five minutes after she stopped fighting it, she was walking by my side with nary a tug. By the end of the block there was no more tugging at all, and for the rest of the walk, she was absolutely perfect walking by my side on a loose short leash. I am absolutely floored! I think Maggie dislikes it so much that she refuses to cooperate, but once Ilse figured it out, it was all right with her as long as we were going for a walk. Ill never underestimate her intelligence again.
