If I speak out, I am fully aware that I will have to contend with the three obstacles and four devils. But of these two courses, surely the latter is the one to choose." (Writings of Nichiren Daishonin - The Opening of the Eyes - Written to Shinjo Kingo in February 1272) Buddhism is often explained in allegory and metaphor. We do not see "devils" as actual entities but representations of the self. And "hell" is not an actual place but a state of being.
